When NEIL POSTMAN first wrote this book in 1985 he never could of dreamed of the prophetic implications it would have a quarter century later. MTV was only a few years old, computers were still in their infancy, cell phones, IPODS, wifi and the like were still sci-fi. Postman was one of Americas leading education and communication theorists,he was a professor at New York University for over 40 years and authored more than 20 books. He goes from how language has changed and the advent of the clock, yes, the clock, thru the printing press, the telegraph, radio, and television has dramatically changed societies. In what ways our discourse has been changed in the education, political, religious and all other areas as technology changed how we communicate. Postmans masterful and experienced writing abilities make this an easy and entertaining as much as an informative and insightful venture into the social psyche. He believed, and i would agree, that the elite control the masses in the manner of Huxleys Brave New World. Thru mindless entertainment and professional propaganda, the rulers give the people the “bait” and they willingly and unknowingly become sheep. Although today we see Orwells 1984 as a large part of the system of control,Huxleys vision of the future is also an integral method of controlling the masses. This book should be a mandatory read for all high school students. And now with the computer age upon us, Postmans amazing visionary mind is more pertinent today than when Neil penned this in 1985. Neil Postman died in 2003,but his insight still teaches us today.
